Things to consider when purchasing a rack mount enclosure:
You are probably wondering what you have to consider when selecting a rack mount enclosure. You have an array of components, all with different lengths, depths and widths, not just any enclosure will do.

Lets start here – determine the number of components you have, then look a the number of rack mount units each one takes to mount e.g. you may have a server that takes up 3 rack mount unites and a keyboard tray that takes up 2 rack mount units. Add up the total of rack mounts units you will need your enclosure to have, determine the amount of space you will need to leave for future expansion and measure where your enclosure will sit or be mounted, this will determine the outside dimensions of your enclosure.

Now think about the environment where your enclosure will reside – is safety an issue? Do you need protection against chemicals, dust or moisture? Then you may want to consider a closed enclosure with enough ventilation to cool your components – otherwise an open rack will suffice.
